DSPCA Week 2

Hey Guys,
Week two over and it flew in but very busy all the same. Monday got off to a rough start with a man trying to dump his 9-10month old pup on us, the pup apparently had been eating the kid’s shoes and other stuff, digging the garden etc and the wife basically said the dog had to be gone by the time she got home. He had only gotten the dog a few months previous and basically said it was our responsibility to take the dog, don’t know where he got that idea from. When you get a pup you have to put the effort in, they are allot of work and teeth etc like babies, all he needed to do here was to make sure the dog was getting enough exercise and had chew toys like pigs ears for his teething. When he rang he said he was on his way up to us to dump the dog, there is no space for this kind of thing at the moment so after and very confrontational conversation he agreed to leave with the dog and seek the warden, hopefully he kept the pup or found it a good home. Tuesday was another busy and difficult day, I went out in the afternoon with an inspector, we went to a call where a family dog had been injured but the family had no idea what and how it happened. We loaded the old dog into the van and brought him back to the shelter, im not going to describe here what happened to him or what I seen but it was horrific to say the least, he didn’t make it unfortunately and the vet had to put him down when we got back ;( . The nurses notified the family and im sure they were distraught, under investigation the case is to determine how the injuries occurred. I went into the DSPCA with a stereotype of the kind of person who causes cruelty, neglect and abandons/surrenders their animals, that has all be thrown out the window, every person out there is capable of things kinds of things its very scary to think. 9/10 there is trouble in the home whether it’s drink/drugs/abuse etc and not only the people suffer but the animals do then also. The DSPCA also have a programme where if you are in a rough situation at home and you need to get to a safe house and get yourself sorted you can give your animal to us and we will look after it until the person is up on their feet, I think this is great, there have already been people using the programme. The calls for surrendering animals are still coming in hard and fast, its very sad for the animal when people just give up for whatever reason, but there are genuine cases. We had a wonderful family in this week that needed to find a home for their dog, the father is terminally ill and the wife can no longer keep the beloved family dog as if she is around it she can bring in contamination to the hospital where the husband is having treatment. The poor woman was very distraught, not having any space was a big problem here because we have nowhere for the dog, after an appeal from Suzanne our wonderful adoption assistant she managed to talk our CEO Jimmy into letting the dog stay and one of the staff has taken him in until we can find him a home ;) ahh. The lady made a wonderful donation to his care, she was very upset leaving him and he was also pining for her at the window as she drove off. We are about things like that, trying to find solutions for people while trying to be realistic. Also of calls this week into the centre for people looking for kitten season, the season runs from April until October traditionally when its too cold cats won’t breed. We will be inundated with kittens in the coming months so if you’re interested let me know and ill add you to the waiting list. The boarding facilities as mentioned are open and fantastic sanitary facilities (see pics below), cats from €14 a day and dogs €18 find more info on our website. The vet clinic is due to open this week, state of the art facilities and 100% of the profits go straight back into the DSPCA. It costs roughly 2.5million each year to run the DSPCA, care for the animals etc only 4% coming from the government, if your interested in becoming a monthly supporter or even donating once off contact me and ill give you all the information, alternatively find on the website. Mini Marathon time is upon us on the June bank holiday weekend, ive done it before and its great fun, we are looking to reach 1000 runners this year for the DSPCA, if you sign up to run for us you will receive your t-shirt and sponsor form. It’s for a great cause and great fun, the fire men at Donnybrook hosing us woman down alone is enough to get me to sign up ;), you need to sign up here also http://www.florawomensminimarathon.ie/ . Just also want to say thank you fair play to Louise&Cathy who this weekend separately rescued kitten who had been hit and run by a car left with a broken leg and a staffy dog who was let run in Kilcoole village getting hit twice, fair play for taking them in and bringing them to the UCD emergency clinic, the dog has gone home with the owner and the kitten to the DSPCA, will keep you posted on the kittens progress. Ciao for now guys more new and updates to follow with some new exciting prospects, especially for those who like to keep fit!!
